and most of em ride sportsbikes…..
its the old 40 something recapturing his youth brigade, same ones who never stop for you, and unfortunately also the same lot who end up binning said plastic fantastic…..
I slept with faith and found a corpse in my arms on awakening; I drank and danced all night with doubt and found her a virgin in the morning.

February 14, 2005 at 10:29 pm #22462speedy claireParticipantOMG…. i`m seriously and deeply offended!! I`m in my early 40`s and I`m certianly not “recapturing my youth” cos I`ve never lost it!! (ask Gixerchick) I always, always acknowledge other bikers and, by the way, it was me who stopped and nearly got beaten up by a biker who I`d estimate was in his late 20`s!! I would totally disagree with you here and say that it`s more likely to be the old 40 somethings who do the all the acknowledging and the stopping. Reason being is that we remember all those years ago when bikers were always courteous, helpful and looked out for their own. I rode bikes in the 80`s and early 90`s and then had a break when my son was born. I came back to them several years ago and couldn`t believe the change in attitudes since i`d been away. Again, I`ve got to say I totally disagree with you and i`m not sure what experiences you base your comment on but would ask that if you`re going to make a totally judgemental remark such as the one you`ve just make then how do you know a bikers age group when they`re usually riding towards you and wearing a helmet??
PS: have edited this post cos did originally apologise and say I hope I haven`t come across as too snotty here but decided against it cos I truly am offended!

February 14, 2005 at 10:33 pm #22463GSF K1ParticipantI have to agree with you (I think) Speedy… I do beleive that its those of us who remember what “Friends of the road” were like.
To “ERR” is natural.. to really fowl things up needs a politician!!
February 14, 2005 at 10:36 pm #22464GSX RatParticipantfirstly – note the word mostly…
second, if you never lost it then it doesnt apply.
However, accident figures will bear out that it is the 40 odd year old, buying a sportsbike after a 20 year absence, having rode a 125 at 20 years old and thinking it’ll be the same that inevitably end up binning it. And in my experience, even the harley guys wave round here (maybe coz im on a rat and not a piece of plastic, who knows – i nod my head to everyone – its the sportsbike riders who ignore you 95% of he time, usually the ones in the fancy leathers that are carefully colour co-ordinated to match the bike (NICE !)….Sorry if you’re offended – but thats my opinion and i aren’t going to change it.

February 14, 2005 at 10:46 pm #22465speedy claireParticipantok, well I usually ride a CBR600 but most recently owned a Fazer 600 but will be looking for another sports bike and yes my leathers are colour co-ordinated to match my bike (but I put that down to being a woman lol). I totally agree with you on the accident figures cos tho I started out on a 250 progressing thru various bikes to a Z1 I agree that the differences in performance after several years away was a bit frightening! Your comment tho (and correct me if i`m wrong) was re the lack of courtesy shown by bikers which is the only point i`m arguing……..
and ok, I aplogise if i`m coming across as a bit snotty but i do take your comments personally

February 14, 2005 at 10:50 pm #22466GSX RatParticipantWell, as i said – based on personal experience of myself, and others i talk too – that is the group who are the worst for it.
That’s not to say that everyone should be tarred with the same brush – i never said that, i said it was that group and i still stand by that comment. Despite this, i still nod to them and when they ignore you i dont let it bother me……

February 14, 2005 at 10:56 pm #22467speedy claireParticipantBut again, how do you know that that`s the group……… as I said if they`re riding towards you and wearing a helmet how can you possibly know that the person riding that bike is in their 40`s??
PS: I`m not normally argumentative

February 14, 2005 at 11:01 pm #22468GSX RatParticipantsome of em people know, some of em you recognise when you get to a bike meet, some you see down the seafront, some you can even see thru the visor….

February 14, 2005 at 11:10 pm #22469RadarModeratorFor my part I nod to all bikers. The ones who return the favour the least seems to be BMW and Harley riders around here. Not saying this is the case everywhere.
Generally bikers whatever their bike or background seem to be a friendly lot, as borne out by this forum.
I have owned bikes since I was 16 without a break, I know a few “born agains” and some have fallen into the I had a Z1 so now I will have an R1 trap.

I find comments about ‘plastic fantastic’ a little insulting….surely its a matter of taste what a person chooses to ride. I would never insult a fellow bikers machine, no matter what they ride, whether it was to my taste or not should be of no consequence. A motorbike is a motorbike….a biker is a biker.
The thread is about whether you would stop to help another biker in distress not about personal tastes.
Personally I do the thumb signals….it is usually enough to ascertain whether the biker needs help or not but as previously stated, caution is always at the top of my agenda.LOVE IS GIVING SOMEONE THE ABILITY TO DESTROY YOU, THEN TRUSTING THEM NOT TO.
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, But rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, Vodka in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming…….WOO HOO, what a ride!
February 14, 2005 at 11:12 pm #22471speedy claireParticipantWell if I ever see you i`ll make sure to acknowlege you……. we`ll just agree to disagree, my experience is that its the younger ones who don`t always acknowedge you and by younger I can usually tell their age as I`m having a good look at the male bodies attached to the bike lol and that doesn`t mean that just cos i`m in my 40`s my tits are resting somewhere on the petrol tank lol

It’s not an insult, it’s what they’re called – same as i dint take to heart the usual comments of “that black pile of crap over there” which usually gets levelled at my choice of ride

February 14, 2005 at 11:19 pm #22475RadarModeratorLove an R1. Would also like an Enfield 350. Don’t know what this says about me?!
As for stopping for bikers, I always do if possible. Stopped a few weeks ago for a bloke on a Kwack custom.he was OK, out of juice and waitng for his Mrs to arrive with a can. He appreciated me stopping and I hope he will pass the favour on sometime.
