I took a trip to Thailand a couple of years ago, spent a couple of weeks on the island of Koh Samui off the Southern coast.

While there the cheapest form of Transport was to hire a Bike. You could hire a large bike but they were expensive. We went for a 125. When in Rome aye? well Thailand in this case.

You can watch a couple of videos we made @

Very cool place, not sure about the menu though!

What are the roads like out there, mostly like the last pic?

Check out the two youtube videos:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L0yctBcZyl4
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ihMIoLPMGKg
they show what the roads are like better than any photo.
The Buddhist way of doing things is a lot more chilled than over here.
Roads are in fair condition, the road above is a back country lane, but it lead to a restaurant on a cliff with this view:

    n684250827_121418_8015.jpg

Most of the roads on the island are more like this:

    n684250827_121429_7801.jpg

In Krung Thep (Bangkok) they are more like this:

    n684250827_119843_6113.jpg
    n684250827_108350_8.jpg

The menu is interesting, I didn’t try any of them!

It’s a beautiful country, I would go back tomorrow if I could.
Bangkok is a bit smelly and hectic but well worth a visit, the Grand Palace (of ‘King and I’ fame) is just amazing:

It’s a world away from the Island of Koh Samui, totally different feel and no smell!

Yes, some great roads in Thailand, Koh Samui is only 20 miles long, you can get there by Ferry. But I would think most of Thailand outside the big citys is going to be like this.

One think to be warned about is making sure you wear the right kit!
Don’t want to sound like a nagging Health and Safety mad Granny. but there are lots of stories about RTAs Killing and Maiming Bikers. Thai Hospitals are very good, but they can also get expensive. Not many Ambulances about and of course the tendency is to not wear a Helmet.
It is a legal requirement but while it is enforced in Krung Thep, out on the Islands the only time that the Police stop anyone is normally 1 day a week on the Main road through the Main town. This is suggested as no more than a beer fund collection!
The standard of helmets you get is not very good either. If I can ever afford to go back I would seriously consider taking my Shoei even if it does have an impact on my baggage allowance.

We cheated with the cafe on the hill, hired a guy to give us a tour for a couple of days, was worth it. Then we spent the rest of the time riding around on the Honda. Didn’t attempt to go off the beaten tracks much.

    Did you go here?:-

We met a guy in the carpark who had lost the keys to his hire ped, was fiZZ1e style basic electrics. took me 2 mins to hot wire it, his almost died of shock when I started it up for him.

Other half wants to go touring round Europe next using our own bikes, seems like a good plan but will always want to go back to Thailand as well.

Ye went to see him, really spookey to see someone like that. took us a while to find him tho my girlfriend had the map and needless to say we was lost, but i did not mind cus we saw some really cool places while being lost. i find that is the best way at times lol.

we also went to go see the so called waterfall but was all dried up and cheecky buggers still tried to charge us to see it ….. dont think so lol.

i watched your vids…. thats sums up thailand no road rules but it somehow works. :D
