What are the best three bikes of all time ?
Two ways of voting, for the time they were made and the best 3 to date.
Brough Superior
Honda CB750
Ducati 916Ducati 999R
Suzuki GSXR1000
BMWR1200GS(Owned 5 of the above).
November 18, 2005 at 8:28 am #36810GSXR1000ParticipantThat’s not strictly true, had a 916, CB750, 999R, GSXR1000 and an R1100GS.
So 4. The R1200GS is a lot better by all accounts.
November 18, 2005 at 8:48 am #36811riff-raffParticipantNo Z1000,GSX 1100 EFE,Katana,Goldstar,350 LC etc,etc[]
I,m a fallen angel who,s lost his wings ands been left out in the cold….
November 19, 2005 at 9:10 am #36812GSXR1000ParticipantNope, the Z1000 was a simple update of an existing style, as was the Z1 really, although that moved the power game on a fair bit when it appeared. (To the dizzy heights of 82bhp. LOL.)
Same with any Suzuki 4-cylinder.
Katana, yes, style-wise, but underneath, just a UJM.
Goldstar? Never. Probably the most over-rated and over-priced bike you could wish to have. It was just a tuned and fettled version of the bread and butter B31, which was a stone-age relic, quite honestly. I rode a DBD34 Gold Star for a few days, one which had been restored, with RRT2 gearbox, the lot. It was quite honestly the most appalling heap I had ever ridden. Yes, it sounded glorious at times, did 80mph in first gear, did a ton and handled okay, but it was the most uncomfortable, vibratory, hard-riding beast imaginable, with a temperemental power band, a ludicrously high first gear which made hand-wrecking clutch slip a permanent job, the whole thing was a huge disappointment, unlike other old machinery, like the 450 Desmo, which is so much better at everything, except being priced in cloud cuckoo land. I agree that they look nice though, in their own way.
I had just about the first RD350LC to appear in the UK. Great bike. A real move forward for street bikes, but just not like any of the above. Same goes for the RD500LC and RG500 I also owned.November 19, 2005 at 11:38 am #36813sidParticipantdont agree with your opinion of the RD350lc it was an icon of the 80’s and i think brought a lot of people into riding because of its looks/sound and power which may not be considered much nowadays but was affordable for almost every 18-19 year old then and would definately be on my top 3
life sucks get used to it

Yep! Agree with what he said![]
LOVE IS GIVING SOMEONE THE ABILITY TO DESTROY YOU, THEN TRUSTING THEM NOT TO.
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, But rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, VODKA in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming…….WOO HOO, WHAT A RIDE!!

Yes. I praised the LC big time, but the 916 was much, much more.
November 19, 2005 at 12:51 pm #36816GSXR1000ParticipantThe fact is that the 250 and 350 LC bikes did not move things forward much. The 250 did a ton, which had been achieved, within a couple of mph, by bikes years and years before it. The 350 was barely any faster than my Kawasaki Avenger of 10 years previous.
The Honda CB750 K0 brought 4-cylinder bikes to the masses, with reliability bikes had never had, with anything like the power.
The 916 brought sex on wheels to the public, combined with fantastic handling and performance from a mere two cylinders.
The Brough stood alone in the 1920s, full stop.November 19, 2005 at 1:01 pm #36817sidParticipantmy 350 was capable of an indicated 130mph without much trouble and it only had the usual mods for the time
the 916 is a different kettle of rattling fish all together but also think the fireblade should be there i think that took sports bikes to a new levellife sucks get used to it

In terms of what bikes have done the most for where we are today, what about the gsxr750 which bought race technology to the everyday rider, the fireblade took it to a whole new level, then the R1 that blew all the competition away and stayed top till 2001?
Personal favourites and the ones that have done the most for modern bike technology in my opinion have gotta be the rd350c, as said bought the average rider in touch with what was yet to come, gsxr750 cos it bought race bike technology to the layman, and the R1 cos it was such a huge step forwards, but there are loads of bikes not mentioned out there, each have made a step forward and bikes continue to do so….November 19, 2005 at 4:02 pm #36819RadarModeratorhttps://bikemeet.net/forums/topic/biking-icons-of-the-last-20-years/
This was my take on the last 25 years which basically covers my biking experience

November 19, 2005 at 4:09 pm #36820GSXR1000ParticipantWhen you are picking just 3 bikes, a hell of a lot of good machinery will miss out, by definition.
By the way, a standard RD350LC, the first model, was unfaired and would do about 114 mph geuine. Clock figures and tuned bikes are not really relevant.November 19, 2005 at 4:15 pm #36821GSXR1000ParticipantThe best bike I ever owned was the 999R Ducati.
Maybe not as fast as the GSXR1000, but had a soul, sound and character that no Japanese bike could hope to match. A brilliant way to take the original 916 forward.
November 19, 2005 at 5:45 pm #36822RadarModeratorTo place a top three from your list
1. Ducati 916
2. Honda CB750
3. Brough
