130mpg from a Malagutti Olympique sports moped. 1974.
I bought it in Retford and rode it home along the A1 to Barnet.
That thing, if driven sensibly could go over 300 miles on a tankful.
Not many bikes do that.GSXR1000ParticipantSomeone said to me on the day that if those responsible weren’t here, they couldn’t do it.
I suppose it is a valid point, but won’t go down well with everyone he says it to…

Less chance of the front wheel lifting under full acceleration. More traction.
GSXR1000ParticipantThe Yamaha R1, 2005, if ridden by Niall McKenzie again, would have done pretty much what the Suzuki did. They are damn close, although the GSXR1000 has a slightly better power to weight ratio.
GSXR1000ParticipantThey only had the one bike as a comparison, but they chose the best one for the job.
In fairness, the bike was only feet ahead of the Ariel and some cars out-braked the bike easily.
The strange thing was that it was the 60-100 where the bike killed the cars where as I would have expected the 0-60 to be the big gain for the 2-wheeler.It seems that traction from a stand is better with 4 wheels and braking sees the same advantage.
Overall, only the Ultima 640 is quicker (not in this test) than the GSXR 0-100-0, but it is not by much and £6000 spent (still only £15K overall) on a longer swing-arm, a turbocharger and uprated brakes would see the bike win.
GSXR1000ParticipantThen again, a Kawasaki ZX-6R with it’s 636cc stacks up well on the road with the GSXR750. Cheaper to insure, better comfort, 170 mph, almost as quick to 100, etc etc etc.
The beauty of the 1000 Gixxer is that you do not get tired wringing it’s neck every time you want to go fast as it is so much more grunty. The 750 gets tedious after a while as it is gutless below 6000 rpm.
The 2005 1000cc just clears off at any revs.
GSXR1000Participant1000cc every time.
I typed out a full reply and at the very end it said ‘sevice not available’.Arrrggghhh!!!
(GSXR now has full Yoshimura exhaust and re-map and has 167 bhp at the rear wheel. It goes like stink.)
GSXR1000ParticipantEveryone should try a Ducati 999R once. It is awesome, although I would not pay double what I did for the 2005 Suzy Thou.
GSXR1000ParticipantWhat bike you got Claire?
GSXR1000ParticipantIt was a great week, yeah.
We both got through a set of tyres in those 1800 miles though. (Towed the Suzuki and my friend’s Ducati 999R with the car, btw, we did not ride to and from the Highlands).
Interesting comparison between the two bikes. The GSXR1000 is certainly faster and lighter, but the Ducati is a very different bike altogether, with far more soul and getting back on the Japanese steed felt really strange at first. The Ducati sounded heaps better, but then it costs twice as much also, £18K against £9K.
Both fantastic machines. Racers of 10 years ago would be impressed, I reckon and we sometimes forget just how much ‘GO’ you get for just £9K these days.
(Fireblades were nearly that much in 1993).GSXR1000ParticipantSounds a bit quick!
GSXR1000ParticipantI have yet to find a car to trouble the ’05 Suzy 1000 even remotely.
I recently did my best to find something to match up, when I met up with 2 guys, one with a Noble M400 and the other with a Caterham R500.
Impressed with the cars? Yup. Especially the Caterham.
Did the bike win? Yup. Left the cars comfortably.GSXR1000ParticipantJust been out for a blast on the Gixxer 1000.
You know, there’s one area where these latest bikes have improved so much, that people don’t mention often.
How fast you can go in the rain!
I will admit that I am a fair-weather biker nowadays.
I have been ‘drowned’ hundreds of times already, but we got caught in the rain today, yet the speed the Suzuki would safely corner at in the wet was impressive.GSXR1000Participantquote:

Had 2 of them. A GT750L and a GT750B.
