Only needs wheels rebuilding, (spoked with stainless rims), a top-end freshen on the engine and some re-chroming.
A re-wire will pretty much complete the picture. (There again, I had a 250 Desmo and a re-wire would have been a good idea from new…)
Lots of work has already been done and over £1000 spent in new parts over the past 2 years. These bikes were brilliant in their day.
My 1975 250 Desmo did an indicated 115 mph on the ludicrously innacurate speedometer, but still equated with a genuine 95 mph, seeing off for top speed my friends’ Suzuki GT250M and Yamaha RD250A and out-handling them both on the road and at Brands hatch.Quality of some parts was frankly laughable, but as a sports 250 it was unrivalled at the time.
GSXR1000ParticipantIt is a beautiful 1974 Ducati Desmo 450 in yellow. Got it for an absolute song and will be doing what little is needed over winter.
GSXR1000ParticipantClosest guesses to date are the 250 and 350 Ducati singles, so it has to be a
???
GSXR1000ParticipantNot a Laverda.
Comes standard as a cafe racer, this model at least.
Above 250cc.
GSXR1000ParticipantIt was called a Banshee.
GSXR1000ParticipantNo, it was a factory quad, ready to ride.
GSXR1000ParticipantTalking of Dune Buggies, I was at a place called Glamis last year, (look it up, it’s well worth it) and was tootling around on my Yamaha 350 LC-engined quad-bike, looking enviously at all the monster stuff on ‘Competition Hill’ and along comes a truck.
Then off comes a Dune Buggy with 1000, yes 1000 bhp. OMFG.Absolutley ridiculous, with huge ‘paddle’ tyres for insane levels of grip in the sand.
That thing flew up the 1-in-3 hill like it was descending Everest.
GSXR1000ParticipantHow would you perform a stoppy or a wheely?
GSXR1000ParticipantJust as well that I guessed what it was.
GSXR1000ParticipantWhat would it be like around Brands?
GSXR1000ParticipantMaddest thing was 130 mph, 3-up, on a CBX1000 in California.
Crazy.GSXR1000ParticipantSeeing how far I could go with my eyes closed. (I was 17 at the time and drunk. The shame of it).
Anyhow, on my brand new RD350A, I opened my eyes to find a car stopped in the middle of the road waiting to turn right…went with him, hit the driver’s door but bounced away and it was a case of off sharpish to the safety of home.
GSXR1000ParticipantCheers. Was interesting reading.
GSXR1000ParticipantHadn’t seen it!
GSXR1000ParticipantAre you in Ipswich itself, Sid?
