GordyParticipantYou’re right matey. It makes no sense either. The older motorcycle enthusiast will take one look and be saddened by the use of such a classic name in association with a cheap and mediocre foreign product, while the young lad will not understand the history and not be able to identify with the name.
I guess the brand owners thought that they were using a well-known name to get instant market-credibility. They failed. Using an old name only works when the new product has some linearity from the previous incarnation. Triumph works because it’s still British, made in the midlands, and putting out products for the masses in direct competiton with the other mass market manufacturers. But the name AJS on a 125 Asian import? No, it just does not work.
It might be a decent bike, but the marketing does not work.

Selfishness.GordyParticipantFinding out that the house purchase is likely to be finalised in a couple of weeks. It’s been a case of two lots of incompetent solicitors, and a fourteen week process!!! When I get the house I’ll again be able to get the bikes out of storage.
What else made me smile… almost keeping with a decent sized bike in my car on a meandering country road (the one past the turning for the Lotus factory in case you know owt about the Norwich area) and he only got away because of a bit of damn traffic. What else… oh yeah, dumping all over a Honda CRX boy racer around Norwich (…would have been rude not to), and finally… today I smiled everytime the boost gauge hit max in thrid gear and the world disappeared backwards. Wooooo hooooo ! Can’t wait to get the bikes back on the road. Take care.

GordyParticipantThe factory turbos were marketing experiments to see if they would lead to big sales, not because they were needed by riders. After all why buy a 500 turbo (CX) when the same company made a 900 (CB) with the same power and just about the same weight (plus much more simple design and better throttle response). It was just shallow marketing, and that is why they did not prosper. And these days, when it’s easy to get more and more power out of a low-mass bike, they are even less needed. Turbo your GSXR600 sir? No thanks my man, I’ll just take the GSXR 1000 instead. The only place where turbos will rule is the aftermarket.
Turbos, even well designed installations, have throttle response characteristics that are OK on cars with their rubber bushed suspensions and high inertia, but totally unsuited to motorcycles. A motorcycle needs a progressive, torque-responsive throttle. A turbo is a little mushy at low revs, interesting as it spools up and then goes whhooooooooooooossshhh as the world flies backwards. Believe me; I’ve ridden lots of bikes and currently own a turbo car.
Now, superchargers, that’s a different story…
GordyParticipantLooks like I’ll be working through it. At least I’ll be able to afford another bike, even if I don’t get to do the Island until 07. Difficult to believe that the last time I went was 13 years ago!
