I stayed at The Ibis Hotel, Bordesley Circus in Early February and travelled to the NEC daily (approx 8 miles) and could have lost my license 3 times a day! That’s the amount of scams they have there. On par with North Wales if you ask me. From a Birmingham paper….

Cameras catching the speeders

A whopping 100 motorists are caught on camera speeding in Birmingham every day but across the UK, a driver breaks the speed limit every 15 seconds, it emerged today.
The Birmingham figure was given by the organisation which runs speed cameras in the Midlands in response to a survey which found more than a third – 34 per cent – of motorists believe the dreaded Gatsos are there simply to raise cash.
However, in the poll by breakdown service company Autonational Rescue, a similar number – over a third – thought they cut speed. Just over a quarter disagreed and rejected the argument that they stopped speeding or saved lives.
But the beleaguered speed camera does have some support. Adam Warwick of West Midlands Casualty Reduction Partnership, which runs the speed camera operation in Birmingham and the Black Country, said: “The figures for this year are not out yet but we expect over 36,000 people will have been fined for speeding and red light jumping during the last year.
“But this is only 2per cent of the driving population in the area and we are only a small operation.
“The cameras deployed are done so on the number of casualties recorded there. So the most dangerous places get the most camera enforcement.”
But Autonational Rescue marketing manager Ronan Hart said: “The numbers of cameras are set to grow, with up to two million drivers expected to be on the receiving end of speeding fines this year.
“Somehow, when we weren’t looking, things seem to have gone too far in the UK and many speed cameras have been sited in places that bear no relation to road safety. That’s why so many drivers feel cameras are there to raise revenue.”
