Ok, as bikers we all know how shite Britains road surfaces are, we know that spillages and debris can mean one minute you are riding along, the next you are on your back or worse. Shite quick fix road repairs, tar banding, chipping, sunken drains/manholes, raised drains/manholes….all potential death traps.
I read this post on another forum, got in touch with Callums Mum and she would be grateful any support.“Would you please sign my petition for safer road conditions on
http://www.4callum.com
it says petition online and links to it
my son was killed when his scooter hit a defective manhole cover and the cover up behind his accident is unbelievable. The story was in mcn a few weeks ago.It is all about a defective manhole cover i have been monitoring since my
Son Callum’s death (2 years ago) also on Bayley Street, Stalybridge 400
yards from Callum’s accident spot, which again like Callum’s manhole was at
least 3 inches deep (75mm)The council should report and fix defects from
40mm although Tameside say they check at 50mm. I also knew that an
inspection was due in aug this year and could not believe it a couple of
weeks ago when it was still in the same condition, so i informed the local
paper who fortunately went down and took photographs and measurements before
phoning Tameside, Tameside were out there one hour later and it was fixed
the morning after and are now saying that there was nothing wrong with it
and it was inspected in august this year. The same as what they said about the defect that Callum hit in December
2003, even though over 5o witnesses came forward and told me it had been in that condition for about 5 years. I have photographic evidence of the manhole cover, measurements and dates printed on the back on my photographs which i had taken into a local Tesco’s to have developed.I just need to keep the pressure on them because i don’t think i will ever
get this much proof of their incompetant inspections again.Thank you everyone

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, But rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, VODKA in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming…….WOO HOO, WHAT A RIDE!!

December 30, 2005 at 10:20 am #40760GSF K1ParticipantMCN did an article recently about poor roads, and featured two bits of tarmac here in Peterborough.. not surprisingly when the coucil realised it was MCN, they repaired them sharpish, but did bugger all when ordinary people phoned in to report.

December 30, 2005 at 10:24 am #40761The BeastParticipantIf you ever need to get the attention of your local councilers, just get a dozen or so mates a few tinnies and party on their front lawn. it does work.

The power of our major motorcycling publication to assist us all is massively under-rated by some here.
This is just one of countless examples where MCN has helped to make our hobby safer and more enjoyable.
Wednesday’s issue was the smallest of the year, due to the holidays, but still included several articles fighting for motorcyclists’ safety, including one on modern road surfaces that may be putting our lives at risk, a brilliant and in-depth comparison between the GSXR1000 and the new ZX-10, up to date 2006 GP and Superbike news, details of a Joey Dunlop movie, all sorts.
Superb.
Things most true bikers would consider essential reading.True bikers dont label other bikers by what they read, and this thread is about something that affects us, something that touched me, not about motorcycle publications, I believe there is already a thread for that. I would like to keep this one on topic for a change, and would like to thank those that have signed, and would urge anyone reading this thread to sign, whether you are a member of the forum, or a visitor just passing and reading out of interest. Thank you.
Regards

December 30, 2005 at 3:08 pm #40763GSXR1000ParticipantIn the first post of this thread it says that it was featured in MCN.
Many more people found out about this tragedy and the real reasons behind the accident than would ever have been the case had we all relied on 8 words on page 29 of The Daily Bum or whatever.
IMO the role of MCN in taking this case forward is huge and thus, we ARE on topic.
December 30, 2005 at 3:11 pm #40764sidParticipantno its not on topic the topic is please read and sign the petition not how f**king good the mcn is

I may have lost less than 9 mates in bike crashes had there been more campaigning by magazines and MPs as there is now.December 31, 2005 at 11:42 am #40766RadarModeratorSigned
