The strips are buried and are very close together, this stops the situation you have mentioned above. This system is used elswhere and is known as DS2. The DS2 sites are not always active and require a Police vehicle to be at the site. The strips are buried as are the Truvelo’s but there is no permanent scamera, the police come along and plug in the scamera to a pole that is a permanent fixture at the roadside.

Unfortunately I can only post the area websites for members to check themselves, because they do move sites on a weekly basis, however members can familiarise themselves with the areas because they do come round quite frequent. Another tip is to know what your local talivan looks like, some use almost plain vehicles, some use vehicles which a blind man could not miss, but be aware most vans know are equipped with ORANGE not BLUE lights, this is another way of blending in to the everyday traffic passing off as a construction vehicle.

I agree, it’s all a farce. They say scameras should only be sited where there is a history of accidents in which speed has been a factor. So how come new link roads and the like have scams situated on them. Maybe some construction workers were mowed down by speeding dumper trucks. If this Government told me it was a full moon, I would have to go out and look for myself.

The biggest lie of this decade, “Its not the revenue, it’s the safety”

No the Truvelo uses a system where there are strips buried in the road just before the scamera, when you hit the first strip it triggers and waits for you to hit the second and then calculates the speed and if needed takes your picky, you will not see these scameras flash.

    Hi
They should tell you where they will be, but this is not always the case. Most scamera partnerships post the information on their websites, I am currently working on a list of these so UK members or visitors can plan their route. Talivans usually use Laser and can target the front or the rear of a vehicle, and not necessarily be parked on the same side as the moving traffic they are targeting.

But on a diferent note, The Observer wrote…

Drivers face hundreds more speed cameras

New speed cameras are to be installed in spite of the claims of furious drivers that the system is designed as a money-making operation.
A government review launched to placate growing protests has cleared operators of being over-zealous – and led to predictions that hundreds more cameras will be erected.
There are 4,500 fixed and 1,000 mobile cameras in Britain – although only about 1,000 operate at any time.
As more police forces join the scheme, and more sites are found that total ‘could well’ rise to 6,000 by spring 2005, according to Ian Bell, safety camera partnership co-ordinator for the Association of Chief Police Officers.
Aware of anger at the increases, police chiefs will tomorrow call for more offenders to be offered ‘speed awareness’ courses instead of points on their licence and fines. The Department for Transport launched a ‘review’ of where cameras were sited at Christmas after an outbreak of sabotage.
Almost all the 35 partnerships which operate the cameras in England have now submitted details and it is understood all or virtually all sites meet the rules.
David Jamieson, the Transport Minister, said cameras would be removed if they did not meet the criteria that their site has an accident record linked to speeding and that they must be ‘conspicuous’.
Jamieson said research showed deaths and injuries fell 35 per cent at trial sites.
Ministers have received more letters supporting cameras and asking for them to be installed than complaints, Jamieson told The Observer.
‘The statistics we have got are impenetrable,’ he added. ‘Thirty five percent is not a statistical blip.
The RAC Foundation motoring group, however, said ministers still face a revolt from drivers and the policy should be reviewed.
Critics say the number of road deaths has levelled out in recent years, despite the cameras, although ministers point out traffic is rising faster. The RAC wants more money raised spent on education, including speed awareness courses.
Cameras raised £7 million profit for the Treasury last year and are forecast to generate up to £20m this year.

    Hi Fred
I am sure we can do something, let us know what info you think we should put in it without making it too intense, any ideas from other members are welcome.

Yes, detectors pick up what is known as splatter, the radar device inside the gatso sends out a radar beam conical in shape (like a torch beam) widening as it travels, eventually this beam bounces back off buildings and trees etc causing radar splatter. It is this splatter that detectors pick up when you are approaching the unit, in most cases when a unit does not have a camera inside, the radar will be switched off. Please be aware that the Truvelo Camera, this is the forward facing one, does not use radar to detect the vehicles speed. (Lucky bikers eh).

You are probably aware that Gatso Cameras are not always armed, when this is the case the radar inside the unit is switched off, therefore no signals are emitted. As for the name of these devices we all know them as Gatso’s, but if you look under the name in the front bottom left hand corner you will see the words GATSO Meter. Totally appropriate (wonder if you can collect stamps from the local Post Office).
