There is a common English word that is nine letters long. Each time you remove a letter from it, it still remains an English word – from nine letters right down to a single letter. What is the original word, and what are the words that it becomes after removing one letter at a time?

February 1, 2006 at 8:33 pm #43311GixParticipantgrrrrrrrr it was too easy lol[:o)]
February 1, 2006 at 8:39 pm #43312Born2BMildParticipantThe trick was to start wuth A or I and work upwards. Took me while though.
Ok how about this one. How can the following be true?
11 and 7 = 3
11 or 7 = 15ID would now this one.
A clue would be to think of a world where people only have one hand with two fingers.
February 1, 2006 at 10:47 pm #43313GixParticipantOk I dont think its the answer but cant think of nowt else…
“eleven and seven” equals 3 words
“eleven or seven” equals 15 “keys” including spacesFebruary 2, 2006 at 9:08 am #43314Born2BMildParticipantNo, sorry Gix. Sid’s getting close by the way![]
February 2, 2006 at 9:49 am #43315GixParticipantOk I have been doin some research, I figured it was something to do with binary (Its what computers are built around as they can only recognize two states; 1 being on and 0 being off. The AND and the OR are logic switches which test the state of a collection of these , which are called ‘bits’ and are arranged into groups of 8 called a byte.) cos you said Dave would know it, so just a case of finding values of 11 and 7.
11 is 00001011 and 7 is 00000111 in binary so when you test each bit using AND you will get 00000011 which is 3 in binary. When you test each bit with OR your get 00001111 which is 15 in binary.
And now I think I understand Daves signature![]
February 2, 2006 at 10:42 am #43316GixParticipantWhich 2 letters come next in this series?
C, O, S, D, C, P, T, J, C, _, _
February 2, 2006 at 7:00 pm #43317Born2BMildParticipantQ and U?
February 2, 2006 at 7:34 pm #43318GixParticipantclose but not quite, one of the letters is correct…
February 2, 2006 at 8:04 pm #43319Born2BMildParticipantMust admit you got me with one, mate. I though the next was Quaternary
and then something beginning U.. Umbrian of something.February 2, 2006 at 8:12 pm #43320GixParticipantThe Q is correct, make the words with the other letters, they are all the first letters of words as Q is to Quaternary, the missing one will then stand out a mile![]
February 2, 2006 at 8:16 pm #43321Born2BMildParticipantGot it. The Tertiary time period comes before the Quaternay.

To complete, can you name all the time periods?[]
February 2, 2006 at 8:26 pm #43323Born2BMildParticipantNot all them, just few of the earlier ones and the last couple. You win, mate.
