I am a smoker and am against a total smoking ban. What the government should do is provide totally non smoking establishments and some establishments for smokers, so people have freedom of choice. Otherwise this country is no longer a democracy but a dictatorship. Smokers are being persecuted, next they are starting on overweight people…………….Where does it end?[!]

June 22, 2005 at 6:51 am #28656ScouserParticipantI hate smoking with a passion, especially when I’m outside and get a faceful of smoke. I would welcome a total ban in all public places were passive smokers have to endure other peoples smoke. If I’m in the company of smokers socially, my wife and I watch to see were the smoke from our company is drifting and then we sit upwind of them, to give us a fighting chance. I don’t keep farting in company and expect them to breathe in my gasses!
I agree that there should be somewhere for smokers to go, but can you imagine a smoking pub / bar? It would be a very hazardous place especially for the staff, and thats with the extraction.
Obviously it is a hard habit to break and most of my wifes family smoke, some of them 40 – 50 per day, cheap fags and roll-ups; it must cost them £200 per month, you could get a Hyabusa for that!Good call on the obesity issue as well Barmy, I’m 20 stone and feel crap. It’s easier said than done to lose weight, I eat the same as my 7.5 stone wife,I eat fruit of a day but I’m not very active with a typical day being, car / bike – to desk – to car – to couch.
Good topic Barmy. I feel better now like I’ve just had a session with a counseller!

Then smokers wouldnt be forced outside for non smokers to breathe in ie caught down wind etc. This would be fair, I respect that you dont smoke, but at the same tone it should be vice versa. But if there was smoking establishments, thats problem solved.
Have you noticed recently all the publicising about losing weight, and they were on about cost of treatment in hospitals, this was aimed at overweight people, they used this issue with smokers. Personally I am only a little person, but my other half is overweight due to medication, he eats properly but cant lose weight cause of disability, but thats not the issue, how would you like being dictated too, to lose weight and if you dont there will be a fine? People should accept people for who they are, no matter what size you are!I’m not riding fast, I’m just flying low. and please DONATE to this website

There was never anyone in it and I noticed last week thats its now closed down!! I do feel sorry for non smokers but I can`t say I agree with a total smoking ban as mentioned perhaps separate areas for smokers

well said. one thing i will add is that maybe smokers, drinkers, drug users, solvent users and very overweight people who need operation/medication etc for self inflicted illness should pay to cover the cost. i’m not being a bastard as i had the same opinion when i smoked etc.
June 25, 2005 at 3:32 am #28660GordyParticipantA ban on smoking? I guess that rules out two-strokes then, huh?
June 25, 2005 at 3:38 pm #28661MattyParticipantI think they should have a designated area for the smokers and if the non smoker does not like smoke then they stay well clear of the area, then again it should be up to the owner of the building or area etc.

Leave it to the establishment owner I reckon.LOVE IS GIVING SOMEONE THE ABILITY TO DESTROY YOU, THEN TRUSTING THEM NOT TO.
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, But rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, VODKA in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming…….WOO HOO, WHAT A RIDE!!
June 28, 2005 at 9:34 am #28663GSF K1ParticipantI’m an ex-smoker too (1 & 1/2 years now!!!), and I’m pretty ok about others smoking around me, but I do think that its time that smokers acknowledge their responsibilities to the health of those around them. What nags me more than smoking in public places, is smokers who persist in smoking around children!! Just like the ads on the TV, if the parents smoke, then the kids are forced to suffer the same fate. If you’re a smoker and have kids, either go outside or not when the kids are around.
Thats my soap box bit.Go out with a BANG… Light a fart!
June 28, 2005 at 3:55 pm #28664barmy_carmyParticipantGixer your point about cost,I’ve paid thousands of pounds in National insurance over the years, Isnt that what National Insurance is for? not to mention the amount of tax I’ve paid on ciggys. So I’ve more than paid for my treatment should I need any. and as I said before ie. one smoking pub and one non-smoking pub, same with Restruants and clubs etc If they done that there would be no need for you to be around smokers. Then everyone has the right to choose which establishment they go in. and that’s my soapbox bit.

June 28, 2005 at 4:07 pm #28665GixParticipantI’m gonna annoy a few people I think here. You people who dont smoke are all on about “the right to choose etc etc” What about the smokers rights? If someone is eating in a pub, I wait till they are finished till I light up, I show consideration to non smokers, that kind of consideration is rarely shown to me. If I want to smoke thats my choice, I am not asking you to stand/sit next to me, if you dont like it, move away…..
Besides…..how the hell they gonna enforce this ban?LOVE IS GIVING SOMEONE THE ABILITY TO DESTROY YOU, THEN TRUSTING THEM NOT TO.

June 28, 2005 at 4:22 pm #28666barmy_carmyParticipantI think they’re on about giving you a hefty fine, if caught smoking. The government are on about a total smoking ban in all public places by 2008. Surely this is a civil liberties issue. Today its smokers.who’s next?

June 28, 2005 at 4:43 pm #28667GixParticipantI know they are on about handing out fines, but how are they gonna enforce it? Smoke police? Special Smoking Safety Camera Partnerships? [:0] They will probably only ever catch 1 in 50 offenders…..

June 28, 2005 at 7:58 pm #28668ScouserParticipantThey won’t fine you,it will just be the landlord or staff request that you refrain from smoking or leave. I bet you when the takings go down they will just let people smoke and eventually there will be smoking and non smoking pubs.
