For a while I have been following Sam Manicom on Facebook. He’s an adventure biker who’s been all around the world, and has written a number of books about his adventures.
By chance I sent him a chat request on Facebook asking about the Pyrenees.
Here’s the best bit of te conversation:
sam:
The area is lovely, particularly if you want to stay off the beaten track. How long have you got and what sort of bikes will you be on?
Me:
We are planning 10 days, will be getting the Portsmouth to Santander ferry. So 8 days really. We are on a general mix of road bikes, cbr1000s, fazers, zxrs etc. We did Switzerland two years ago which was amazing, 6 days based out of Vitznau on Lake Lucerne. This year we were up in Assen for the Ducati Weekend.
Sam:
8 days? great. You can cover a lot of ground. Suggest you take a look at the Cantabria area on your way to the Pyrenees. There are some great twisties and some magic views. A lot of people blast past the good stuff. Get a Michelin 572 map (Michelin maps for Spain are brilliant by the way). Get off the ferry and head SE onto the CA261. There’s a great camping site at Ramales de la Victoria. Lots of great roads with excellent curves to explore in the area. Next day head south on the N 629 and then cut across to Espinosa de los Monteros. Head West mostly on the CA631. Clint Eastwood country : ) Terrific! When you get to the N 623 main road, head south again. That’ll give you a nice kick start of twisties and views before getting you back on the main roads for the ride to the Pyrenees. Loads to see. You’ll be wishing you had more time : )
Needless to say, I have ordered said map from amazon.
I am looking forward to plotting the route and seeing what he’s come up with. More details to follow during our curry night!
If your on Facebook have a look at his feed. ‘Adventure motorcycle travel books by Sam manicom’
