Wednesday 18/08 Awoke to find a decent looking day, demolished the tent and packed everything away in the bag and it was road again for another full day, but not too early at 10:30. Returned to Pwllheli to find gridlock! Don’t know if the folks were trying to get in or out!, I was doing the latter so that right hand gutter beckoned me to overtake the long queues. Onward to Porthmadog and then I was back on my original route to the Northerly point at the top of Anglesey. A487 it was through Caernarfon and onto crossing the Menai Strait on Stephensons Brittania Bridge. The A55 heading North West in the direction of Holyhead was another VERY windy road but at 80/85 oh sorry – bang on 70 – the miles soon melted away. At Valley it was a right hander onto the A5025 and onto the North point at Llanbadrig, this road actually skirts the north and east side of Anglesey taking a twisty route all the way back to the Menai Strait.
Northerly Point
Just after passing through the village of Cemaes there is a very narrow twisty road which leads to the tiny church and churchyard at Llanbadrig, which was my 4th and final destination before the run for home.
Llanbadrig Church
Wylfa Nuclear Power Station (currently being de-commissioned)Approaching the Strait I saw a sign for Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, so sought a photo opportunity and took a slight detour.
Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch StationDown the A5 in a southerly direction passing through Capel Curig I decided to stop for a break at the tourist hot-spot that is Betws-y-Coed, unfortunately Radar must have already passed through the Town as they were completely out of ‘light salads’ so I plumbed for that traditional tourist trap lunch of Fish & Chips! Upon departure it started to rain (strange, last time I was here it did the same….it is Wales after all), I chose to go the more picturesque route, back on the A470 through Blaenau Ffestiniog! Well by picturesque I really mean DRAMATIC due to the slate quarrying. Then it was back down that 8 odd mile straight and into Dolgellau and the well trodden route (for me) continuing down Dinas Mawddwy through Cemmaes Road, Carno, Clatter and Caersws where I left the A470 and ran into Newtown on the A489. A break was called for so it was feet up and a coffee in town. From that point on I know the road like the back of my hand for the remaining 58 miles back through Church Stoke, Ludlow, Clee Hill and Bewdley and finally Kidderminster.
Once back, I reflected on the trip as a whole, 707 miles over 3 days of not really rushing about, gambling on not seeing much rain (no proper waterproofs you know), the roads being wet at times but I stayed dry. The mystery of where precisely I would rest my head at night, and camping out for the 1st time in over a quarter of a Century. That final run back from Anglesey was ‘In the groove’. You hear about born again bikers, for that trip I was a born again Teenager!!!!
