is 12000rpm in fifth gear more of a strain than if the bike was in sixth gear at same rpm?
June 9, 2005 at 11:23 pm #28313GixParticipantGod knows but what gixer you ride? They dont redline till 13500 (well mine dont) so never thought about it…

June 9, 2005 at 11:35 pm #28314RadarModerator12,000 shouldn’t trouble any GSXR in 5th or 6th gear.
Welcome to the forum BTW. Quite a bit of GSX-R stuff on here.

Most modern engines are engineered with a fair safety margin. So your bike will be designed to take considerably higher revs than the red line, or rev limiter will allow.
In this way the manufacturer can ensure reasonable reliability most of the time!

I’m not riding fast, I’m just flying low. and please DONATE to this website
June 10, 2005 at 10:53 pm #28320GSF K1ParticipantI agree with Scouser.. doesnt matter what gear you’re in, the engine is still rotating and making bangs 12000 times per minute, the gear is only changing the ratio so varying your speed. Obviously not recommended in first gear as the engine will very quickly over rev.

June 11, 2005 at 7:45 pm #28323GSX RatParticipantless….
you will obviously be travelling at a lower speed at 12000 in 5th than 6th
therefore wind resistance will be less
so the engine has an easier time of it…
so by that theory, if you want to ride at 12000 rpm and save engine wear – ride in first………
