Rethink over speed camera
SPEEDING tickets are today being reviewed as part of an investigation into a faulty roadside camera in Suffolk.
The revelation comes in the wake of a succession of motorists being falsely accused of racing along the A140 at Earl Stonham.
Suffolk SafeCam, the organisation responsible for speed enforcement in the county, said the probe will “examine the validity” of the prosecutions.
Spokeswoman Michelle Finnerty said: “The films have been looked at as part of the investigation and the partnership will be releasing information as soon as the findings are complete.”
The latest driver to fall victim of the camera is Michael Green, 49, who was accused of reaching 78mph along A140 at Earl Stonham last September.
After receiving the ticket, Mr Green, of Bramford Road, Ipswich, was so stunned he even considered challenging the authorities to prove his vehicle could hit such speeds.
He claims his ageing E-registered van can only travel up to 62mph.
He said: “I just couldn’t believe they’d said I was doing 78mph because I knew it wasn’t possible.
“I would’ve been quite happy for the police to take my van out for a test drive to prove to me it could go that fast if they’d have wanted.”
After alerting the partnership to the error, the threat of prosecution was withdrawn the following day.
Despite being sorted out very quickly, the ordeal caused a great deal of worry for Mr Green.
Being convicted at such a high speed would have had serious repercussions for his career as a taxi driver.
He said: “I’d probably have been banned and that would’ve meant I’d have had to find new work. It was a very serious matter for me.”
His case comes in the wake of The Star highlighting the cases of bus driver Trevor Martin and Robin Atkins, who were both incorrectly flashed by the camera.
Mr Martin was accused of travelling at 81mph, even though the tachograph fitted to his vehicle proved he was only doing 29mph.
