    Signed it !
How crazy is this…the rest of the c~r driving nation needs an incentive to start riding, and help with their carbon footprint whilst helping to reduce congestion. There is just no justification for a tax increase whatsoever.

    Crikey this gets me mad.

Having signed up eventually it was looked into by the powers that be, but guess what they have no plans to multi band bikes like they do with cars. Here is the response :-

    Read the Government’s response
Unfortunately there has been a misperception that has developed about the Vehicle Excise Duty rate for the very smallest motorbikes.

The Chancellor’s Budget 2009 was delivered on 22 April this year, and in line with the announcement made in the November 2008 Pre-Budget Report all rates for all motorbikes have been frozen in 2009-10. They remain unchanged from the rates implemented from 13 March 2008 onwards, as announced in Budget 2008.

For the smallest engine motorbikes, such as typical 125cc commuter examples, the rate remains £15. This is a level that it has remained at since 1991 – it is therefore the eighteenth year for which Vehicle Excise Duty on these small motorbikes has been frozen.

It is quite correct that an exemption is in effect for the very best performing, low emissions cars. The Government believes it to be important that the tax signal on cars be structured this way. It exists within a system of 13 bands for cars, which are intended to highlight the possibility of choosing a lower-carbon version of car, within every vehicle class – including family cars, people carriers and 4×4s.

Rates of Vehicle Excise Duty for motorbikes are based on a reform implemented in 2002. This retained the engine size banding system, but introduced further segregation of bands between engine sizes. The reform followed a consultation that took in the views of some 12,500 respondents.

Unlike for cars, the European Union (EU) has not established a type certification regime for motorbikes that requires carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions data to be produced. The Government is therefore not in a position to treat VED for motorbikes on a CO2 emissions basis, and the current engine capacity based rates therefore offer the best practical, and easy to understand way to reflect the respective environmental impact of different motorbikes.
