Was struggling to find an MX practice track open this weekend so decided to go play on Dartmoor.
Planned out a route using Google maps and it all looked pretty straight forward on paper. Unfortunately even tho Google maps shows terrain on the sat image it don’t tell you what the ground is like so I found some swamps and bogs that looked just like grass till I got in them! LOL
I decided the route I’d planned was not really possible or safe by myself so went off to have a play. Thought that if I stayed where the rocks were I’d more likely not sink and all was great till I saw a tempting hill that looked too much fun to ignore!
Got almost to the top and lost my balance, dropped the bike and jumped clear. Unfortunately my radiator took the brunt of it and was now spewing coolant all over the engine
It only seemed to be having a strop when the engine was running but I wern’t gonna carry on heading out to the unknown so trundled back down the hill and followed my tracks back to the reservoir where I had parked. With the bike on “roads” rather than out in the wilds it was running cooler so followed the reservoir round the long way back to the car park. Was some beautiful scenery and apart from the radiator it was an enjoyable ride. Gonna strip the bike down tomoz morning if I have time and assess the damage
I have taken a few pics but don’t have a data cable at the mo so need to work out how to get them off my phone. Will post them up once I’ve sorted the IT issues
In the mean time this is the area I was exploring:
This was my planned route with some bits I wanted to explore highlighted:
But this was as far as I got:
On the way back I went all around the reservoir clockwise and took some snaps, will pos them later

is your bike registered for use on the road or is it fully off road?
was just wondering about how you ride across land and not get b0ll0cked by the PO’s. im probably asking a really stupid question thereNovember 8, 2008 at 9:16 pm #56969HippoDronesParticipantIts a road legal enduro bike…. sort of, I’ve removed the headlight and put an MX front number board on instead coz it spends most of its life on MX tracks and no point wrecking a perfectly good light fitting!
Riding on green lanes is perfectly legal if done on a road legal bike. Deviating from the paths can be frowned upon tho so if ya gonna, its best to do so in a quiet place not generally populated…. like the middle of some moorland!

cheersNovember 10, 2008 at 10:58 am #56971imperialdataKeymasterWow, another tough ride for the bike (and you). What was the damage on the rad, just pipework or a new rad needed?
Google need to add “Swamp/bog thing” to their maps, it looks great.
Google Swamps anyone?
November 10, 2008 at 11:18 am #56972HippoDronesParticipanthehehe, would have been handy if they did that! :0 LOL
The rad has folded in at the side squishing i set of cooling fins and put a curve on the whole rad, it also pushed in at the bottom a nice crease in the bit that holds the water and squished one of the hose connection bits.
I am about to post it off to a company that specialises in MX/Enduro rad repairs to get a quote for fixing and strengthening it so hopefully its repairable rather than needing to replace it… My old Speedtriples rad cost over £400 IIRC to replace so hoping its repairable! [:0]
November 10, 2008 at 11:20 am #56973HippoDronesParticipantI had my Sunday planned out nice but that all went astray when I tried removing the radiator, expected it to take around 2hrs, but unfortunately the bike is so easy to work on I had it completely removed and drained in around 10min!
How cool is that!
November 12, 2008 at 2:40 pm #56974HippoDronesParticipantGot the quote for the repair yesterday, £71 delivered and I should get it back on Friday which means if my socks get pulled up I can get back down Ginger’s Farm this weekend and hopefully if the weather is on our side head over to Golding Barn on Wednesday as I’ve got a week off work. Am really looking forward to getting back to Golding Barn as its an awesome track and I wanna see how well this KTM flys compared to the heavy and slower Yams I was riding on the offroad experience day I did there in August!
November 13, 2008 at 10:09 am #56975imperialdataKeymaster£71 seems good. Is that from KTM or an aftermarket one?
November 13, 2008 at 12:05 pm #56976HippoDronesParticipanttis the busted rad repaired rather than a new part! Was from this company:
https://www.gmxradiators.co.uk/cgi-bin/shopwise.pl?id=gmx
Although I have not gotten it back yet… due back tomoz I am very impressed with their customer care and they seem a top notch company, (well I wouldn’t expect less seein as they were recommended to me) so if anyone else needs any work done on a rad quickly it maybe worth bookmarking their web address!
