I took in the big airshow held at RAF Cosford near Telford on Sunday. Went up on the Thundercat with my younger daughter on the pillion. The plan was to avoid the worst of the traffic…which I did. But I got caught in a huge downpour on the way home and got epically soaked…hey ho….
The show itself was superb and here are a few pictures…
The Thundercat basking in the sun. The organiser had made excellent provision for bikers. I was to be glad of those carrier bags over the helmets later!
As part of the defence spending cuts the RAF have got these natty outfits second hand from some bloke called Lucas…”May the RAF be with you!”
This Rocket and jet powered monster is being prepared to take a crack at raising the LSR to 1,000mph!
This used to be a FZR1000EXUP, one of my all time favourite bikes
Jaguar fighter bombers have recently been retired from RAF service I think. Loads of them were dotted about at Cosford. Many will be scrapped I expect. A cracking aircraft that served with distinction, notably in the 1991 Gulf War
Hawker Hurricane, 70 years on from the Battle of Britain and still looking good, a MKIIC flew in company with a Spitfire IX later in the display
Sopwith Camel, the Spitfire of WW1 and from the same company the Triplane. These were joined by a number of other WW1 replica aircraft and put up a great show
Lynx helicopter that was really thrown around the sky by its’ navy pilot
Current RAF trainer the Tucano, but painted in 1940 style markings. Looked great
The Dutch AF sent along this F-16 and the pilot really gave it some stick, setting off car alarms as it scorched skywards on full re-heat!
The Red Arrows arrive in perfect formation and stunned the crowd with their immaculate precision flying
Close crossover head to head!
Break!
RAF Tornado GR4 breaks sharply away after a simulated bombing run. In service since 1986 but still a great aircraft
These four ex Red Arrows pilots put up an incredible display…you were watching through your fingers half the time!
This brightly coloured Hunter put up a spirited display in company with a F86 Sabre
Appropriate to finish with the Spitfire and Hurricane…70 years on from the Battle of BritainI didn’t get any pictures of the staggering Eurofighter Typhoon being put through its paces, it later flew in formation with the Spitfire too…an evocative sight that linked past and present perfectly.
A superb show, just a shame I got epically wet on the way home!

Some great pics thereJune 16, 2010 at 11:59 pm #60790TT07ParticipantThanks for the post Radar, I’ve actually flown solo at Cosford, but minus an engine! Back in 1971 and still at school (only just) I spent 2 weeks there with the schools RAF Cadets, 39 flights of training and 3 solo flights later I got my Glider Pilots Certificate. That first solo flight was one of those remember for all time moments! I keep returning to the place, just to relive the buzz of the moment.

Oddly enough I did a glider flight from Cosford in 2001, loved it!
From the cockpit just prior to release from the Chipmunk that was towing us
