New speed cameras face both ways
Modified cameras can take pictures from front or rear
Speeding motorists and bikers will now be flashed both as they approach a roadside camera and after passing it.
The first modified camera is installed on Wellingborough Road, Northampton, with others being upgraded over the course of the next year.
The pilot study in Northants targets speeding bikers as well as vehicles.
Chris Hume, Safety Camera Partnership Manager, said: “It makes it easier for us to identify bikes or vehicles which have only rear registration plates.”
Traffic police have called for the new cameras because of the difficulty in identifying motorcycles which tend to have their registration number on the back of the machine.
“This enhancement to our fixed site cameras will help us enormously,” Mr Hume said.
“Our mobile cameras have always been able to monitor traffic travelling in both directions but our fixed sites have been limited to front facing.”
