What’s the best paint to use and how do I go about applying said paint?
keep in mind i dont want to take anything off of the motorcycle… cos I have no luck with that sort of thing and will probably wreck the bike if i need to remove anything.
And what about spraying the engine if its got chrome over it?May 17, 2006 at 8:47 pm #48928RadarModeratorPM GSX Ratbiker, he is our forum expert on Matt black paint
May 17, 2006 at 9:01 pm #48929LeviathanRanParticipantWill do ^^
May 18, 2006 at 4:14 pm #48930GSX RatParticipantb and q, £6 a can and put it on with a tarbrush, pissed is better as you dont worry about all the hairs in it….
May 18, 2006 at 4:52 pm #48931LeviathanRanParticipantPissed what? So will this bnq paint go over chrome? what about the chrome engine and forks?
I assume cos it’s from a tar brush it’ll just stick right over the existing paint wont it?
And this is just regular matt black paint?May 18, 2006 at 4:55 pm #48932GSX RatParticipantIt will go over chrome, scratch it up with sandpaper first although it may need a second coat.
It’ll do the cases of the engine but the barrel and head get a bit too hot so if you need to do them use stove paint to do them and the exhaust
Pissed – you want to be, ie drink lots of beer then brush it on thick.
Also, to get an interesting finish throw sawdust over the first coat as its drying then give a second coat to get a sandpaper effect.May 19, 2006 at 3:38 pm #48933GSX RatParticipantTar brush is just a local saying for a big 4 inch or so brush…
ie slap it on thick and job will be a goodun!
B and Q matt black blackboard paint is the stuff i use, otherwise rubberised roof paint or pickup bed liner is the way to go.

I ask because I’m planning on turning my 125cc into a Rat/survivor, the whole Rat concept looks so cool. Also do you know the legalities of attaching spikes/chains to the gas tank and front mudguard? They’re not sharp they just look sharp and will adding all this stuff make the bike illegal to ride on the road?
Edit:
ratbike.org has been my required reading project for the last 3 days lol
some very good looking rat’s on there.
these
are fantastic.Edit 2:
These are the spikes I want to stick on the mud guard and tank, after spraying them Matt black.May 21, 2006 at 7:53 pm #48935MerlinParticipantDon’t really understand the urge to paint over bikes with this stuff
