In a somewhat discreet weekend for the Honda Teams, Konica Minolta Honda used Sunday’s adverse weather conditions at the Official Test in Catalunya to try out their wet race setup.
During the morning, the team’s only rider Makoto Tamada was only able to cover 6 laps on dry track. When the rain started to fall, the decision was taken to stay in the box for until conditions were completely wet.
During the 40 minute qualifying session, the Japanese covered 14 laps on his first experience of the Honda RC211V’s wet race settings. Despite this opportunity, Tamada was still frustrated at not being able to continue the dry testing.
“ My impression is the same as that which I had already had with a dry race setting. Even in these conditions the last part of the corner approach needs to be improved. I am not yet able to ride as I would like, because I have to force the bike too much to make it lean. In Jerez, we hope to find better weather conditions and have the necessary time to complete the development of the RC211V’s basic setting,” declared the Honda rider, who also gave an exclusive interview to motogp.com in Japanese this weekend.
Managing director Gianluca Montiron believes that tyres have made the difference for the MotoGP teams this preseason.
“We have only started testing the new rear tyres Michelin has developed this year here in Montmelò, therefore we cannot be satisfied with the balance yet. However, we have verified that their potential is very high”
