If it is the belt, you could do what I did when me VCR went the same way and that was to tie a knot in it to shorten it. I spent ages, fascinated, watching the knot go round and round after testing it with the cover off.

January 21, 2006 at 7:36 pm #43143imperialdataKeymasterFixed a fair few of these in the past and generally (as the others said) it’s a dirty/dusty lens on the laser or wear and tear. For the latter I’ve adjusted the read height of the laser where possible but if it can’t be done then it’s new unit time. As you say, no harm in looking! January 22, 2006 at 10:52 am #43144ScouserParticipantAgree with cleaning with the q-tip. When your disc starts jumping keep your finger on the fast forward holding it down for a few minutes then release, sometimes the linear slide that the laser lens is on gets clagged up, possibly with chocolate crumbs and vodka fumes and forcing it to traverse quicker than normal, may free up the clag. Alternate between FF and RW keeping your finger on the button. If all that dosn’t work get the rampent rabbit out!
