Helicopter finds mini-moto riders
The force has received complaints about youths riding the bikes
A police force is to use its helicopter to hunt down youths riding mini-motorbike illegally.
Warwickshire Police said it had been used this week to gather evidence against riders in the Kenilworth area following complaints from the public. The helicopter can record video footage of offenders and inform officers on the ground where the riders are.
The machines can reach speeds of up to 60mph and at least five people died in accidents in the UK in 2005.
The bikes can only be used on private land, unless the rider has a driving licence, tax and insurance.
‘Downright nuisance’
Sgt Chris Cambray, from the Kenilworth Community Policing Team, said: “This type of anti-social behaviour is sometimes seen as a laugh by those who commit it.
“It is not – it is illegal and it is dangerous.
“Riders usually display little evidence that they have the driving skills necessary to keep them alive on a bike.
“Their behaviour is a downright nuisance to residents who deserve quiet enjoyment of our lovely town and we will continue to utilise every means available to reduce this behaviour, including further use of the helicopter.”
The helicopter is shared with two other forces.
