Traffic was bought to a standstill in Northamptonshire to allow a convoy of hundreds of Harley-Davidson motorbike riders to attend a memorial service.
Riders from as far away as York descended on Jack’s Hill Cafe, on the A5 near Towcester, before setting off to visit the National Memorial Arboretum in Burton on Trent, where a wall stands covered with names of servicemen who have died since World War Two.The first annual Ride To The Wall event was organised by Martin Dickinson, director of the Nene Valley Chapter of Harley Owners Group, to pay tribute to those who died while serving in the armed forces.
Members of the Casualty Reduction Partnership at Northamptonshire Police joined the contingent, which met hundreds of other riders at Tamworth, before arriving at the arboretum at 11.30am on Saturday.
Pc Steve Harris, casualty reduction liaison officer, was among the officers who stopped the traffic on the A5 to let the riders set off together.
He said: “It has captured quite a few hearts and it’s not about celebrating the conflict but about raising awareness.
“At first it was a couple of hundred people and it’s grown and grown. We’ve just been engaging with riders to make sure everything goes smoothly.”
