Ignition switch springs to mind. You need to check for voltage in and out of it. No neutral/oil light etc points to the switch if the main fuse is OK. A backfire will happen if there is unburnt fuel in the combustion chamber which suddenly ignites, this often points to a bad contact somewhere and if all electrics die the switch is a prime suspect.
Get a wiring diagram and trace the 12 volt feed to and from the switch.
