Fonsi Nieto has revealed that he will be leaving the 250cc World Championship in 2005 to pursue a career in the World Superbike series. The 26 year old announced on his personal website that he has signed an agreement with NCR team owner Stefano Caracchi to ride a factory Ducati 999 RS in the production bike championship after failing to secure a ride in MotoGP.
Nieto tested with the team on a Ducati 749R Supersport at Almería recently and will make his competitive debut on the 999 at the opening round of the WSB series in Qatar on the 26th February.
Nephew of former World Champion Angel Nieto, Fonsi has made 99 Grand Prix appearances and taken five victories. His record also includes twelve pole positions, seven fastest laps and eighteen podiums, the last of which came in the second round of the 2004 season in his home race at Jerez, venue of his debut win two years previously.
