First speed cameras installed in barrow
THE first permanent Barrow speed cameras have been installed on both sides of Salthouse Road.
The cameras have not yet been activated. That is expected to happen in the next two or three weeks.
But the devices, worth £45,000 each, already appear to be slowing down drivers. Cars approaching them have been spotted with their brake lights on.
Fixed cameras are welcome news for safety campaigners but speeding motorists face points on their licence and a hefty fine.
The penalties have led some drivers to believe the cameras are sited as “revenue earners”.
It is also argued that most accidents on Salthouse Road are caused when a lorry or high load hits the railway bridge.
Cumbria Road Casualty Reduction Partnership — responsible for the cameras — point out there were two people killed or seriously injured on Salthouse Road in 2001 and two more in 2003.

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, But rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, Vodka in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming…….WOO HOO, what a ride!
