Drivers face new cameras
By Louise Watt
Feb 28, 2005, 08:25Motorists in Sandwell will be targeted by seven new speed cameras to be placed on major roads.
The number of devices are being increased by nearly 20 per cent in the latest blitz against drivers in the borough. The news has provoked anger from safety campaigners, who say cameras do not reduce accidents and are simply a means of raising cash.
Six speed cameras and a red light camera will be added to about 40 already in operation in the borough.
Four speed cameras will be placed on the A4031 Walsall Road in West Bromwich, two in each direction. A further two will go on the A461 in Great Bridge – at Horseley Heath and Dudley Port.
And a red light camera will be sited on the High Street and Trinity Way junction in West Bromwich.
Their installation was agreed by Sandwell Council’s cabinet member for community, neighbourhood and safety, Councillor Keith Davies.
Highways director Peter Whitehouse said in a report: “Safety cameras have been deployed in Sandwell for some years. They have proven to be one of the most effective means of controlling speeds and have made a significant contribution in reducing the number and severity of road accidents.”
But Paul Smith, founder of the Safe Speed road safety campaign – http://www.safespeed.org.uk – said: “Road deaths in West Midlands have gone up from 74 in 2000 to 96 in 2003. Nationally camera fines are way up and road deaths are up.”
Three other cameras, approved last July, have now been installed. Two on Wood Green Road, Wednesbury, and one in Cranford Street, Smethwick.

LOVE IS GIVING SOMEONE THE ABILITY TO DESTROY YOU, THEN TRUSTING THEM NOT TO.
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, But rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, Vodka in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming…….WOO HOO, what a ride!
