PRESS RELEASE – 26th September 2005
12th Classic Motorcycle Mechanics show sponsored by Central Wheel Components
A sell-out! That is the message on the 12th Classic Motorcycle Mechanics Show, sponsored by Central Wheel Components at the Stafford County Showground on 15-16 October 2005.The response to the show has been phenomenal, with bookings coming in as early as last October. The sheer volume of bookings we have received has meant that we have had to increase our outside trade capacity to accommodate more traders.
The club and concours classes also filled up months in advance, complete with the inclusion of a brand-new club. The Classic Strokers have never attended a Stafford event before and it will be interesting to see what kind of display they present. Individual details of what clubs will be displaying have been slowly filtering through and among the plethora of excellent bikes are all manner of special, exotic and rare machines. Harry Hawkins will be showcasing his Yamaha RD600 triple, Jeff Dale of the Historic Honda Collection will be displaying his 1963 Honda CR93. Also, appearing on the Malmesbury Classic Motorcycle Club stand, displayed by Brian McDonough, is a collection of excellent Bridgestone machines. Included in this display are a 1960 B57 Deluxe, a 1965 Surf Rider, and a 1967 SR Scrambler.
The Kettle Club will be an interesting stand to visit with several of its bikes on display having recently taken part in a rerun of the Maudes Trophy Run. The Maudes Trophy was a challenge trophy donated to the A-CU in 1923 by George Pettyt, proprietor of Maudes Motor Mart, and was an endurance test for motorcycles. The run started in Portslade on 10 September and is due to end there after making its way around the coast of the UK.
Three-time British Superbike Champion and ex-GP star Niall Mackenzie is this year’s guest of honour. Niall will be performing various presentations throughout the weekend on his career and will also be on hand to sign autographs and answer questions. His Yamaha France factory YZR500 that he raced on five occasions in 1991 will also be on the Mortons stand.
The RG500s of Barry Sheene will also be on the stand for the weekend. The pair of machines that Sheene raced in his championship years of 76 and 77 have only just returned to the UK after being in dry storage in Australia, whence Barry emigrated in 1984.
Alongside the Sheene machines is the Classic Motorcycle Mechanics project bike. The 1260 Katana has been the project bike for the past six months and all the work and racing has been serialised in the magazine. The work has been undertaken by the Editor, Rod Gibson, and he has been racing it in the Straightliners series, with a best time to date of 11.37sec and a terminal speed of 121mph on the standing quarter-mile at Elvington. If you have any questions about the bike or if you need any information about a project of your own, Rod will be on hand with his motorcycle to help you.
Bonhams have an excellent auction lined up with some exceptional lots for sale. Among the items in this year’s auction is the ultra-desirable ex-George Brown speedway special Vincent which is expected to attract a global audience. The estimate for the motorcycle is between £35,000 and £45,000. There is also a 1914 Wolf 2.5hp Model B veteran. The VMCC register of machines lists 12 Wolfs in total from 1910-1936, only one of which is the 2.5hp Jap-engined model, which is estimated to fetch £2500-£3000.
