City trials no-skid manhole cover
The manhole cover is coated in non-slip material
A new non-slip manhole cover is to be piloted on the streets of Bristol.
The city is the first in Europe to introduce the specially-coated covers, which are designed to stop motorbikes and bicycle tyres skidding.
They will be placed on manholes around the new road system in the Broadmead area once its £15m revamp is completed.
Bristol City Councillor Dennis Brown said: “This new type of cover should make the road much safer for two-wheeled traffic.”
He added: “The engineers working on the new Broadmead development have endeavoured to design the road to avoid positioning covers on bends where heavy braking is likely.
“However, with a multitude of utilities on the highway, this is not always possible.”
