BIRMINGHAM TERROR THREAT
West Midlands Police have warned the public of intelligence suggesting a possible threat to Birmingham city centre.
No vehicles are being allowed past the inner ring road as a result of the threat.
However, bars, restaurants and clubs are not being closed.
“We understand the impact this (the road closures) will have on people and will keep the situation under review and advise the public appropriately,” a police spokeswoman said.
“West Midlands Police are issuing a public warning to people who may be visiting Birmingham city centre tonight after they received intelligence to suggest a threat to the city centre.
“Our response needs to be proportionate in the actions we are taking and informing the public.
“We are not closing bars, restaurants or clubs but we are asking for them to be searched and for people entering the premises to be searched.”
Outlining details of the road closures, the spokeswoman continued: “There will be a higher police presence in the city centre and access by vehicles will be limited.
“No vehicles will be allowed past the inner ring road into the city centre.”

Police in Birmingham in the Midlands are evacuating the city centre.Earlier they issued a warning they had received intelligence suggesting a threat to the area.
“Our response needs to be proportionate in the action we’re taking and in informing the public,” a spokeswoman for West Midlands Police said.
Police are now closing down the Birmingham Broad street entertainment zone and asking people to go home. A statement will be released shortly.

Birmingham City Centre was re-opened this morning after last night being transformed into a ghost town following the evacuation of 20 000 people.
Four controlled explosions were carried out in a bus on Corporation Street near the Square Peg pub last night, although coppers now say the item destroyed had not posed a threat. Bomb disposal squad officers also examined a suspicious package at the Travelodge hotel in Broad Street.The device, a box with wires hanging out and a switch on top, was later found to be harmless. Police said they did not believe the alert was connected with Thursday’s London bombings.

Was driving back via there last night about 11PM. Took another route home in the end. Motorway signs actually said “AVOID B’HAM CENTRE” at every junction. Think the police did a good job of clearing the town from what I’ve heard, can’t have been easy on a warm Saturday night.
