The French government have published their 2005 statistics on road fatalities, and in general, the number of road accidents resulting in deaths diminished 4.9% over 2004. The number is now below 5,000 (4,975).
Age Groups
In the age group 18-24, there were 6% less deadly accidents, ditto for the 25-44 age group (-10.5%) , however, the age group 15-17 saw an increase of 12.6%.
Vehicles
Cars saw -10% less accidents (partially attributed to the increase of fuel costs), but PTW vehicles were the bad students, since they scored an increase of +1.3% over 2004. Within that category, mopeds are the worse; +3.8% (not really surprised on that one to be honest).
The only form of transport that had a higher increase in fatalities were; PEDESTRIANS !!! It’s more dangerous being a pedestrian in France than a motorcycle rider !!! They had an increase of +8% !!
Points/License/Speeding
A total of 54,242 licenses were withdrawn, an increase of +37%. Speeding represented 65 % of offenses processed, against 53 % in 2004. 69 % of those exceeding the speed limit who lost points are less than 20 km per hour and 1 % equal to or greater than 50 km per
hour.The rate of exceeding the speed limit is 16 % for private cars (20 % in 2004), 40 % for motorcycles, and 20 % for heavy goods vehicles.
