Picked up the bike yesterday and got the insurance sorted today, so with the sun blazing down it would have been criminal not to venture out and see what it was like to ride outside of London where I took the test ride before buying it.
The bike starts first dab of the button and the twin Akros boom into life, it also has a kickstart (on the wrong side) which I will try using when no-one is watching LOL
Out of London it actually seems a bit quieter, but that maybe because of the acoustics from the surrounding building when I first heard it run up there. It is by no means quiet tho even on tick over.
I filled up with go-juice and had a quick spin around town which seems to be its natural habbitat [] the front wheel claws into the air off the power in the first two gears, and I expect with a bit of practice I’ll be able to hook it up in third too with a lil bounce and dumping the cluch.
Ot on a duel carrigeway the bike is like a fish out of water, it’ll do around 100mph but it prefers going a little slower, head into the country skinny lanes tho and it really scoots along, not quite lent it over as far as the previous owner to scrape the pegs (he was wearing racing slicks then tho) but it is very easy to throw around. I keep wanting to compare it to my 250 but that isn’t fair, this is a far heavier bike but that don’t stop it or hold it back on the tarmac.
I think it won’t take me too long to get used to and it should help me learn how to back a bike in on the tarmac as well as improve my wheelie and stoppies too. Talking of stoppies, the brakes seem awesome, plenty of power and feel, am sure I’ll have the back end lifting off the ground in no time! []
Unfortunately I was wearing sunglasses rather than goggles so under the trees in the lanes my vision was reduced so I wasn’t able to nail it as much as the bike seems to be eager to do, next ride I’ll wear goggles or my full face Arai, I’ll also poss be able to get a vid with my helmet cam as that is mounted on my Arai.
Initial impressions are full on thumbs up, its to be seen if I will get bored with the performance or not, if I do I’ll prob go for a comp spec SM as I really like the riding style on these bikes compared to the sportsbike hunch.
Will post more as I ride it more. It was so good to get out on a bike today tho, even a ped would have put a smile on my face today!
Up at Box Hill for a brew:

With all the bikes we seem to get through we could end up with quite a large database of bike reviews from real riders rather than the press who get given the toys to test

Have done a vid but its a bit naughty, tis on my facebook so peeps on my friends list can see it
Will try sorting one that I don’t mind hosting in the public domain, but its hard not to misbehave!
September 16, 2009 at 10:33 pm #59282HippoDronesParticipantStill no vid I’m able to post lol, the bike is wicked fun! []
Took it out on my fav road up in Scotland, its a mad road from the base following one of the loches to a village called Arrochar. The bike is very flickable and the longer travel WP suspension soaks up the roughest of road surfaces and in the twisty bits the wide bars and low down torque really help you throw the bike down and gun out of the corners.
The bike runs out of steam at around the 100mph mark but it is thrapping it then so I tend to stick between 70-80 on the open bits, the bike is not for open roads tho so it wouldn’t be fair to expect to be able to cruise at 90+mph. I am terrified of running out of fuel tho, down south on less twisty roads I only managed 80miles to reserve, up here I think that would be the bottom of the tank and 60miles will be all it can do to reserve. Its ok as long as I fill up every petrol station, feel silly sometimes only putting in £3 but as I venture further from the base into the twisty zone the fuel stops are further and further apart so better to be safe than sorry, especially with no mobile signal in the mountains.
I was very tempted to venture up some fire breaks on my last outing and think it would handle it no probs, but with being out by myself and my tendancy to end on my arse I thought better not while so far from base. I will take it up some trails when either closer to base/home or when I have a riding partner and some emergency brake/clutch levers with me! []
September 16, 2009 at 11:45 pm #59284TT07ParticipantThat sure looked good fun, and can see you know the road well, I wondered, are you really supposed to slacken off for the “slow explosives” sign?!? See what you mean about the front clawing the air, as it spends a fair amount of time off the deck!
September 17, 2009 at 12:37 am #59285HippoDronesParticipantThat was the 2nd time I’ve rode that road in about a 6 months and that was on my 250, still getting my head round it. It actually looks a lot less technical in the vid than in reality. Top fun tho.
Hahahaha, I love that sign, is it like “Slow Elderly People” or “plant Crossing” []
Used to ride it a bit on my Speedtriple but that was a bit much for it so its nice to be able to get the power down on the KTM, especially over the humps!
September 17, 2009 at 6:01 pm #59286imperialdataKeymasterGreat vid. Is the front wheel leaving the floor a few times in it?
September 18, 2009 at 12:03 am #59287HippoDronesParticipantmight be! [] lol

Tut, tut. Glad you are thinking of getting a nice sensible RGV250…
September 19, 2009 at 10:35 am #59289HippoDronesParticipanthahahah, I’m a fool I know :$ lol
September 27, 2009 at 4:38 pm #59290HippoDronesParticipantAlthough I am still unsure as to if this bike is for me I am getting more used to its charms and the different riding style to my gixer. It is a very very naughty bike and although it could do with more power or less weight or both it is still top fun around town and on the tighter twisties.
I gotta comment on the brakes tho… THEY ARE FANTASTIC!!! [] and with hot tyres it is teaching me some new bad habbits as I prey for red traffic lights where I can roll up to them on the front wheel with so much confidence and then pull away on the back wheel [] need to get my head round changing gear on the back wheel tho, still not got that one sussed properly yet
September 27, 2009 at 9:00 pm #59291katanaParticipantSounds like a right laugh mate. At least it saves on front tyre wear!
