In the 1940’s, 50’s and in 60’s these provided family transport. The advent of the cheap small car such as the Mini and the Hillman Imp killed them off as mass transport. Hardly ever see one now.
When I worked near Coalville in Leicestershire there was a specialist sidecar dealer nearby, can’t remember his name (help me out here Scouser) but one customer was a vicar! He had a sidecar hurse made for bikers’ funerals!! In black (obviously) and hauled about by a black Triumph Speed Triple! It was featured in the national press too in about 2001 sometime.Anyway, enough rambling, anybody out there still using a sidecar? My only experience with one was when a colleague at Lotus had one attched to is CB250RS so he could ride it on L plates. I had a go. Scary!!
Remember the tilting “Sidewinder” side cars too for fitting to LC’s and Gammas to get around the 125cc learner law in the UK then?
Sidewinders were great. Totally useless but it meant you could ride a 1000cc as a learner.
Tried “gutter riding” (sitting in a sidecar) a few times and was scared stiff. Rode the bike though and it was great fun. Slammed the brakes and turned the steering and the whole thing just span round. No other benefits I could see though!
