Back in the mid 1980’s a mate of mine had an original Yamaha SR500 and go me a brief ride on the old girl. It was a lovely characterful bike to ride. The engine out of the legendary XT500 in a more road orientated frame. Great classic looks too. But it didn’t sell very well and on lasted on the UK for a few model years. The one I rode was a late model 1980 example. They go for good money in the right condition these days. In Japan the bike remained poular and, in 400cc form, remained in production

Well with the recent trend back to more striped back basic bikes and customs Yamaha have decided to bring the SR back to the market. No 500 for us this time though, but this 400 version still looks very cool. Hope it sells well for them

It’s a nice, uber-slim bike. Glad it’s coming back, I enjoyed riding one of these.

From the photo, it looks like it’s good in earthquakes too  ;)

Saw one ‘in the flesh’ so to speak in my local bike shop just before I took the MT-07 out. I have to saw it looks great and I would love one if I had the space and the cash. Its £5300

My only reservation is that it is kick start only, no electric foot. Oddly my daughter’s SR125 is t’other way around.

I sat on the bike and the switch gear is exactly the same as my 1980 RD250LC, you have got to love it!

I’d rather have a kick than a button on a bike like this personally, especially if wanting to customise it :-)

Fair point, I hadn’t really thought about it from that perspective

Funny, that: I’ve just been choosing my second bike (for when it’s too slippery to get the TDM up our drive), and a 400cc Jap single came top of the list…. albeit a SM  8)

Last bike before the kids was an SP370 – felt like flying ‘cos it was so small: good fun on Forest B roads…. A SM would be perfect for winter hacking. I wonder if Debs’ll notice…..

Hide it amongst Andy’s (Thumper) fleet…

I like the look of it apart from the loooooonnnnnng exhaust. Reckon a stubby pipe would suit it better.

That is exhaust long, but I bet loads of aftermarket alternatives are available, especially in Japan
