If I think back to my own licence it covers groups A,D and E of which A was Car, D Motorcycle and E Moped BUT that was early 1970’s If you passed an A Car test you could automatically ride an E Moped. The D Motorcycle was a separate test and when passed that entitled you to also drive a three wheeler car or ride a motorcycle combination which is why three wheeler cars were relatively popular as they were driven on a motorcycle licence. I would reasonably believe that if you have held a licence for some time and only if you passed a motorcycle test you would be allowed to ride a trike whether it is an automatic or not, and if your automatic car test was taken many years ago and it is the only test taken and passed it does not cover a three wheeler or trike. This is only the way that I see things in relation to my own licence, as I said earlier probably best to wait for that answer from the DVLA. Good Luck I hope it works out OK for you.

I hope you have a chance to have a look at the varied sections here – something for everyone I would think.
As for the question….I just do not know to be honest. I would hate to give the wrong advice, as you could well be getting even the guys at the DLVA to scratch their heads and think for once!
Anyhow, my gut feeling is that you’ll be ok, but in the meantime all the best, and happy trike hunting!May 26, 2008 at 11:27 am #55454RadarModeratorWelcome to the bike forum. Follow this link to help you look around.

Regarding the licence, hmmm. Do you pass a bike test before you became disabled? In which case you should be fine with a manual trike. Otherwise I am not sure and I would be interested in what the DVLA have to say
May 26, 2008 at 6:53 pm #55455imperialdataKeymasterI think forum member safgan may be able to help here. Try dropping him a private message, he built a Cagiva Raptor trike for himself. If you can’t get hold of him, he’s on http://www.notafridge.co.uk
Welcome to TBF, let us know how you get on.
May 26, 2008 at 7:48 pm #55456raymondParticipanthey thx for all the replys guys i passed my car driving test only just over 2 year ago now. people who i have talked to say you only need a full car licence its having only a automatic licence what is getting to me as i said most trikes i have seen have manual gears that is fine by me as i would not have a problem useing them. but depends on were i stand with the dvla at the end of the day…….
May 29, 2008 at 10:05 pm #55457raymondParticipanthello again all i tryed safgan but no reply as yet imperialdata. still no word from the dvla i have re emailed them again i tryed https://www.netupandgo.com/hankschopshop/index.html as they build convert trikes ect ect….. and even they could not answer my Q. paul one of the lads there who emailed me back said to contact NABD but i tryed them all so and they did not know i would just go out and get a trike but i dont want to go breaking the law in any way.

June 5, 2008 at 10:33 am #55459imperialdataKeymasterSurely someone at the DVLA can answer this. Do you get pushed around departments there or can you not get through by telephone?
June 23, 2008 at 1:01 pm #55460TT07ParticipantHello again Raymond, wondered if your getting anywhere with the license/trike question?
Of absolutley no use to you what-so-ever, ‘over the pond’, licensing for trikes is being reviewed in South Carolina:

Good Luck with YOUR quest.
