Went to Elan valley for reccy for ride in may, its too narrow for the amount of bikes i hope will attend, but took some pics any way
so, now we have a choice of 2 routes, either go from crossgates to Aberystwyth, and then our separate ways, or do the Crossgates – Newtown – Llangurig – Rhyader – Crossgates loop. I know both routes fairly well.
Some great pics Gix, see what you mean about it being a bit narrow. Is there no other stopping off point further on as scenic but wider? Would we overfill that layby in pic 3?
yes we would over fill it. Not worried about stopping points (we are leaving from Crossgates), worried about trying to get marshals at back of line of bikes past up to front ready for junctions, also in places the road is even narrower, and cars have trouble passing each other, with the amount of bikes I am hoping to turn up, its just not a safe and viable route, its very narrow, bad surface, very twisty (a good few hairpins) and there are going to be a few inexperienced riders, its a demanding road to be keeping that many bikes together safely.
Great Pics Gix, the roads do look rather narrow for the number of bikes that could be involved. The Xgates loop to Quatt although well trodden by most of us does offer quite a few places to gather the troops.
What are the options now?

Don we wont need to stop at all to gather riders, the marshals keep the ride together.
Its either Crossgates to Aberystwyth or the Crossgates – Newtown – Llangurig – Rhyader – Crossgates loop.
