After hearing a rumor that in october the uk bike laws are changing so that untill you are 24 you can only ride upto a 125cc bike, being a bike fan and the kind of person who thinks that speed (not the drug) is the best adrenaline rush you can get, i have decided to take the leap and go for my test this summer.
im 21 and im a big guy, about 6″2′ and 23 stone a sportsbike is out of the question.
Im looking for something about 600cc comfortable, relaible, with a bit of grunt in it for those lovely empty roads we all dream of.
Ill be using it for commuting to and from work (30 mile round trip) and visiting family every month or so (150mile round trip) so ill be doing a fair few miles.
I really like the look of this bandit style:

but im told having a fearing will help on the motoraway and make things a little bit more comfortable.
i will have about £2500 at the most to spend, any opions greatly appreciated.

    Welcome to the forum

The 600 Bandit comes in faired and unfaired variants, The faired model is the GSF600S and is a capable all -rounder

Other bikes to consider when you have passed your test

    Yamaha FZS600 Fazer
Honda 600 Hornet (also available faired and unfaired)
    Suzuki SV650

Anyway follow this link to take a look around, and good luck with the test

i really like the look of the 600 hornet ill have to look into that, but im not a fan of the fazer.
My uncle is a keen rider and a huge kawasaki fan (owns a 636, zx10, zx12 and a zzr600) and reccomended an old zzr600, he said they are cheap to run, buy and maintain. does anybody else have experiences with zzr’s?

Iknow a chap on another forum runs a 92 ZZR and is very happy with it. Another mate run a 94 model in the mid 90’s and loved it. It is a typical Kawasaki with a stonking engine, but slightly soft suspension.

Early Fazers are very good btw

Get your Dad to join here too, sounds like quite a bike nut himself

True, an unfaired bike is harder on the wrist/neck/back on motorway journeys of that length. I found though that at 6’1″, my sportsbike fairing used to throw the wind into the top of my helmet, not over my head. Result – bad neck pain on 50 mile plus fast journeys. I replaced it later with a screen an inch taller and different profile and it helped a lot.

Just to throw a spanner in the works, how about 2 bikes, something “sit-up” style and tall-faired (older BMW?) for the long journeys and something a bit racier bandit-style for local rides? Secondhand it’s a buyer’s market at the moment and you could come in at less than £2.5k for the 2. Insurance could be done on a multi-bike policy too so it shouldn’t break the bank.

thats not a bad idea actually, im visiting my family in 2 weeks and im gonna have a little play with my uncles zzr600 to see what i think, i think im pretty much decided on a zzr because they are a good alrounder and apparently are really cheap to repair incase i drop it.

Having more than one bike is great, adds variety. Several people on here have more than 1 bike, Thumper currently has four and further expansion of the fleet is imminent
