repol Honda’s Nicky Hayden topped the timesheets in the test day in Spain which saw MotoGP world champion Valentino Rossi again off the pace.
Rossi crashed during the opening round of the series at Jerez on Sunday and the Camel Yamaha rider could only recover to 14th.
The riders remained at Jerez for today’s test session and Hayden set the quickest lap of the day with a time of one minute 39.910 seconds.
Second in testing went to Spaniard Sete Gibernau who was forced out of the race with mechanical problems on his Ducati Marlboro machine.
Italian Loris Capirossi, winner of Sunday’s race, was third quickest in today’s testing.
Rossi was only seventh quickest in the test as his team tried to solve the vibration problems which had hampered him all weekend at Jerez, relegating the Italian to ninth position on the start grid.
It was from that unusually low start position that Rossi was rammed from behind in the first corner and he had to dig his bike out of the gravel trap.
British rider James Ellison was 16th fastest in the test on the Tech 3 Yamaha, having finished in the same position in Sunday’s race.
