Speed limits are being permanently reduced in two Barnsley villages in a bid to reduce road accidents.
Motorists in Athersley South and Royston will have to cut their speeds from 30mph to 20mph, after a successful pilot of the restrictions in 2005.Highways officers said the move had been prompted by a high number of accidents in the villages and residents’ concerns at drivers’ speeds.
Signs that show drivers how fast they are travelling have been installed.
Leaflets and banners are being distributed to publicise the changes in a council campaign entitled “Twenty’s Plenty”.

If a vehicle is speeding it triggers the sensor which in turn activates a set of traffic lights which turn to red. The vehicle has to stop! Thus loosing any time gained by speeding. People soon learn and slow down anyway. Vey neat, very effective and nobody gets any points or pays a fine.
