I have always toyed with the idea of restoring a bike, an old British Classic like a Norton Commando, or a 70’s classic like the Suzuki GT750 ‘Kettle’, but I’ve been thinking recently about doing up the B reg Honda C90 we have; possibly putting some go-fast goodies on it or restoring it to original condition.
If you already owned a second bike that needed some TLC would you restore to original, soup it up or both?

Take it easy out there
June 16, 2005 at 12:44 pm #28452barmy_carmyParticipantOur son got a yamaha 750 SE special, we did get it up to good order, but it just been sat in our back garden uncovered and rotting away, it breaks our heart to see it in that condition. But we dont have the pennies to restore it. My son has lost all interest in the bike, and doesnt have the pennies either. Its such a shame though.

A Yamaha 750 SE ? Was that the twin cylinder one known as the US Custom ? From the early 80’s ? Or ‘US Custards’ as us two stroke, simpson bandit, paddocked-jacketed, white baseball booted idiots used to call them ?
AAhhhh the memories !!

June 16, 2005 at 12:58 pm #28454ScouserParticipantBarmy, does he want to sell it and for how much? Are there any photos of it? How long has it stood out in the weather?

June 16, 2005 at 11:40 pm #28455RadarModeratorIt was an air cooled V twin if memory serves. There was also a 1000cc version called the TR1. Niether sold well, although the XV750SE was a nicely balanced machine for a custom. The TR1 was a total flop and the last of the UK bikes were sold off in Greece apparently.

I’ll get me belstaff.

June 17, 2005 at 5:36 pm #28461GixParticipantAre the cylinders meant to be that colour originally or have you painted them that colour?

Hey Radar.. maybe you should do up the CB250RSA back to original spec condition???
Go out with a BANG… Light a fart!
June 18, 2005 at 7:01 am #28464RadarModeratorWell the XV has been given an “interesting” look! The US Custom tag was applied to a number of Yamaha offerings in the late 70’s and early 80’s. XS250, XS650 and the AS750 triple all recieved the treatment. Kawasaki did the LTD range, Suzuki the L range and Hona were just called Customs, I did loads of miles on a CX500 Custom in 1985 whilst I was a DR.
Ads for returning the CB250RS to factory spec all would need is a standard exhaust. However to return it to concours conditions would require a significant investment anf the bike, whilst fun, simply is not worth enough, even when restored to make it even remotely viable. Shame really. She goes well just as she is!
