    Recently I have started to notice that there is mountains of press coverage coming the way of BMW’s ever evolving GS range, much of it in the wake of Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman’s recent “Long Way Round” exploits.

    To back this up the GS range is now outselling the Yamaha R1, which had been until recently the best selling big bike in the UK. So after many years is the reign of the Sportsbike in the UK, kicked off by the GSX-R750 of 1984, finally drawing to a close?

    The UK has bucked the European trend that favours these big adventure bikes, typified by the GS and others of it’s ilk such as the Triumph Tiger.

    The big adventure bikes certainly seem to offer a more rounded motorcycle experience. However for me one of the pivotal reasons that I ride is for the shear buzz and excitement that a sportsbike, even a relatively mundane one such as my 98 Thundercat, offer.

    So while the appeal of the BMW’s, KTMs etc etc is growing, the Japanese, Italian and British sportsbikes, represented by such fantastic machines as the R1, 999 and Daytona 955i still provide the better bike for the sporting rider in the UK.

    I’ve done the sports bike bit and decided to go the big traile way with the Varadero as you know. I know its not as flickable around the twisties and the suspension is like Val Doonicans rocking chair but I still get a buzz from riding it.

    I do like the look on the new KTM650 which I choice in the ‘money no object topic’ and if I ever dare venture back to sports bikes it would be the Hyabusa for me, plus I woluld like to lose 5 stone, one piece leathers and 20 stone don’t go together well. Bibendum comes to mind!
