Children as young as 12 are frightening pedestrians by riding mini-motorbikes through Lichfield’s parks and alleyways.

People in north Lichfield have reported youngsters riding the bikes around Stowe Pool, David Garrick Gardens, Dimbles Lane and Bloomfield Crescent.

Elderly people have been left in fear after the noisy machines raced through alleyways at night.

City campaigner John Walker said he was inundated with calls. He has informed police and was due to take up the problem at a meeting of the North Lichfield Initiative.

Mr Walker, of Samuel Close, said: “They are making such a racket and it’s frightening elderly people.” He said that the problem has been around for at least a year but had returned with a vengeance recently.

“People are getting sick of it, especially elderly people because these things make a hell of a noise. I’m saying we are not going to tolerate it.”

He added that the youngsters riding the bikes were not wearing helmets and could hurt themselves and other people. “I blame the parents,” added Mr Walker.

Lichfield police chief, Inspector Trevor Steventon, said that police had the powers to confiscate mini-motorbikes.

He said that officers would be on the lookout in North Lichfield for youngsters riding mini-motorbikes illegally.

“We have the power of seizure of any motor vehicle including mini-motorbikes being used anti-socially,” said Inspector Steventon.

“That is the ultimate power we would exercise.”

Inspector Steventon said that when the problem of mini-motorbikes reared its head in Lichfield his officers had acted quickly.

“Previously we have seized mini-motorbikes and gopeds,” he added.
