Speed camera nets £4.2m in fines

A single speed camera in Nottinghamshire has caught almost 76,000 motorists in five years.

The camera, on the A610, has caught almost a third of the speeding drivers in the county and has resulted in £4.2m in fines.

The Specs “time-over-distance” cameras measures how long it takes to pass between two points on Nuthall Road.

Safety officers say accidents and the number of people injured on the road has halved in three years.

    ‘Not cashing in’

Almost 280,000 motorists have been caught speeding in the county in the past five years – raising £16m in fines.

Alison Richards, from the county’s safety camera partnership, said: “We’re definitely not cashing in.

“We have to look at driver responsibility first of all. All drivers should know – because they’ve passed their test – that the road signs indicate that they’re coming into a 30mph zone.

“So they should start to think about slowing down before they get to that 30mph speed limit.

“We judge if a speed camera is working by the reduction of casualties at a particular site.

“It is an absolute shame really that we’re in the position where cameras are hated so much and that people are paranoid that more cameras are being put up,” she said.

“If drivers slowed down and paid more attention on the road we wouldn’t have this issue of casualties or collisions and therefore we wouldn’t be looking at installing more cameras.”

Councils can keep revenue from fines to cover costs. But they cannot profit from them and any surpluses go to the Treasury.

And especially for you Radar….a nice little ‘League Table’:

Coming in at Number Six in the charts:

    Lancashire – a mere 84,560 tickets issued and £5, 073,600 riased

Essex comes in at Number 5 – 85639 tickets issued and £5,137740 raised

    In fourth …Avon, Somerset & Gloucestershire – 99,141 tickets and £5,949.060 raised.

In third – London – 10891 tickets issued and £6.497,460 raised.

Just pipped at the post …TVP – a mere 111,466 tickets issued and £6,698,760 raised.

and topping the charts at NUMBER ONE…..

Mid and South Wales top the charts this time with 121,353 tickets issued and a whopping £7,281.180!!!

Cambs only managed to raise £1,245,780 by issueing 20,763 tickets

    Cleveland – £1,268,640 from 21,144 tickets

    Lincs – £1,423,020 from 23,717 tickets

    Suffolk – £1,618740 from 26979 tickets

    Cumbria – a mere £1,618,740 from 26,979 tickets

Mancester raised £2.9 million – snaring 48,000 motorists – some of which was contested.

The AA say (reportedly) the speed limits for similar stretches of road vary too much, and that tolerances are also too varied – leading to injustices as some drivers are more in danger of licence loss than others. They also highlight the unfairness of some being offerered a Speed Copurse alternative to points: this and tolerances should be uniform.
