To start with i know absolutely nothing about bikes, I have been tasked on a course i am doing to give a parts and labour costing for the engine refurbishment of a Yamaha RD350LC – 350cc 2 stroke, 2cylinder 1981. I have no idea what goes into an engine can anyone help? Please remember if you can suggest a part that should be in it can you tell the quantity i.e spark plugs 4 etc

    Many thanks

Group effort here then guys and girls or we need to get an exploded diagram of an RD engine. Any takers?

OK, one other question – what do you call a refurbishment?

Could be as simple as change the plugs, changing the main and gearbox bearings and seals, full rebore, full rebuild from blown crank. It’s a very ambigious question to be asked and i suppose the best reply you could give if thats all the information you have is either how long is a piece of string, or it’s however much you want to put into it.

Everything you wanted to know about RD350LC but didn’t know you needed to ask:

https://epll.no-ip.com/rd350/rd350.htm (sorry in french but piccys ok)

    https://freespace.virgin.net/rojer.thomas/Thumbs.htm (some english stuff)

    https://www.yamaha-rd.com (everything RDish)

    https://www.d-murray.co.uk/rd350.htm (turn the sound up)

https://www.classicmechanics.com/bissue/2002-10.htm (bottom of page – buy the back issue and bobs your uncle)

    https://www.aircooled-rd.com/default.asp?txtPage=intro.htm (more RD stuff)

    That should get you going

Ok I’ll give you the task as its worded on the sheet:

Produce an itemised job costing for carrying out the following task. Clearly identify labour and parts cost and explain the basis on which the labour costs are calculated. (they may be calculated on a DIY basis)

    1) Re-furbish a motorcycle engine (new pistons, rings, bearings valves etc)

Thats all the question says, the only reason i picked the Yamaha was that one my mates has one.

The best thing you could do then is to pick something like a 50cc moped engine. This will contain the least number of parts that you can get away with, if you have a choice go for a 2 stroke as this will eliminate the valves, and you will be left with:
Rebore?, piston, rings (should come as a set, will be included in the price of a rebore if you need one), little end bearings, big end bearings, crank bearings, crank seals, spark plug, gasket set, variable speed drive belt, and output shaft bearings and seals. This is for the engine and varispeed drive which will be a lot less complicated than a gearbox such as found on the rd. Price the labour as diy, that way you can forget it, apart from the rebore.

You could say labour is priced at £30 per hour, maybe £28.95 if you want to look like you really reasearched it[:D]

How about visiting a garage and asking for a price on a full engine rebuild. They may have that info at hand for a particular bike.

Katana’s idea of buying a ‘motorcycle mechanics’ issue may prove very useful. Otherwise GSXH’s small 2-stroke idea to keep it simple is a good one too.
