A PENSIONER who suffered a heart attack at the wheel of his car was miraculously saved – because the force of the resulting crash got his heart pumping again.
Grandfather Ronald Mann fell ill while driving his Honda Civic and lost control of his car in Compton, West Sussex, hitting a tree.
Medical staff at St Richard’s Hospital in Chichester said the accident helped save the 77-year-old’s life, because the impact caused him to bang into the steering wheel, restarting his heart.
Dr Mann, from Waterlooville, Hants, said: “It’s a very unusual story and quite a lucky escape really. One’s got to be thankful.”
Pc Caroline Lowe, of Chichester police, added: “It was memorable as a crash that gave life rather than took it away.”
He spent six weeks in hospital following the accident in October so doctors could monitor his irregular heart beat and implant a defibrillator device in his chest.
