Proposals are being drawn up for a new traffic control system aimed at freeing up the roads around Hereford.
Cameras could be installed on the city’s busiest routes such as the inner ring road with images being beamed back to a control room.
Electronic signs could also be installed on the major routes to warn motorists of delays or diversions.
A council spokesman said it was a long-term plan that would help to manage traffic more effectively.
The scheme, which will cost a six-figure sum, will be subject to Government funding.
Councillor Brian Wilcox, cabinet member for highways at Herefordshire Council, said tackling traffic congestion was a major issue across the country and that Hereford was no different.
“Herefordshire council remains optimistic that a successful bid to government is achievable within the next five year period of our local transport plan,” he said.
